one of the ten things i hate about singaporeans

July 7, 2008 at 11:09 pm (news, ramblings, sports, wtf?) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

First off, let me say that I’m a Singaporean – a 21 year old male who has completed his national service last year.

Like most of my mates in unit, I resented the 2 years spent in my camp at desolate Lim Chu Kang.

Unlike most of them, the patriot in me still felt it was necessary as much as my hatred for this unwanted conscription burned.

Simply put, we do this to protect the things important to us.

However, there are times when I question why the heck am I putting in the effort to protect some of the idiots on this island.

Yesterday was one of those instances.

pedra branca – 2012

May 30, 2008 at 1:37 pm (lol, news, pictures) (, , , , , , , , )

Now that Pedra Branca rightfully belongs to Singapore under the recent ICJ ruling, we can finally get its future redevelopment and reclamation plans underway. Nope, it’s not a military installation as many had expected.

Artist’s impressions below :

I’d bet you can never do that with the Middle Rocks, but then again there are no ERP gantries in Malaysia ^^;

Timeout

May 28, 2008 at 2:46 pm (anime, news, ramblings, sports, videos) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Seems like lots of stuff has happened since the last time I posted – namely cyclone Nargis in Myanmar followed by the devastating earthquake in China. Totally different responses by their respective governments too, but I’m gonna leave the political analysis to the newspapers for now.

For news closer to home, I’ve just ended my 3rd week of my Principle of Economics course (3 more weeks to exams and to Krabi!) while enjoying my weekly doses of anime with my picks being Kurenai, Code Geass and Macross Frontier for this season. And oh yeah, Manchester United won the Champions League in the early morning of May 22.

YEAH, WE WON!!!!!!! XD

Ok ok, so it’s like almost a week since the final so why the heck am I writing about it now? For one, I was too emotionally drained after the epic match to press the power button on my CPU so I went to bed. What a match. Both sides were soooo close, I almost felt the urge to pity John Terry. Almost.

Yeah, Chelsea fans would probably tear me a new one after seeing this video but it’s just as well I have no friends that support Chelski so far ^^; To be fair, Chelsea had their own share of injury problems at the start of the season before they started grinding out their routine wins which pushed Man Utd all the way in the title race. Their players are definite quality and their consistency is nothing to snuff at, but I can only say that in the end, the right team won.

Flowing attacking football that resulted in a superior goal difference? Check.

Unbeaten in Europe on the tougher road to the final? Check.

Enough said.

Of course, things could have played out very differently during the game with each side dominating either half and goal-line clearances as well as woodwork strikes were aplenty. On the other hand, I have the fortune of retrospect and I am satisfied that the team with the attacking ethos (Nou Camp aside) won the double ^^;

So now that the club football season is over, what’s left to do?

Well, wait impatiently for the next season while digesting all the latest transfer gossips of course. Hooray for tabloids and the Internet! lol

I think what Manyoo really needs now is a true striker – an out-and-out predator who bangs in the goals up front. Rooney and Tevez are class, but they play too deep to fulfill the van Nistelrooy role – whom I think was one of the better strikers in Man Utd’s long history. What I heard is that Luis Fabiano and Daniel Alves are being lined up as transfer targets, but then again everything transfer-related nowadays are to be taken with a pinch of salt. Only time will tell I guess.

Wow, thats a pretty long rant about soccer and Manchester United. It’s part of the withdrawal symptoms I guess ^^; And now to continue creating my Man Utd all-time best XI on Winning Eleven..

creative quagmire

April 2, 2008 at 9:44 pm (news, tech) (, , , , , )

I guess this picture sums it all up.

ouch

In case, you don’t know what that thing is, it’s a Creative sound card not quite working too well anymore.

This is just an example of the backlash faced by Creative after accusing a driver modder of ‘infringing intellectual property’ when in fact the modded drivers had actually improved sound card performance on Vista. Granted, the guy shouldn’t have asked for donations in the first place but the way the Creative brass handled the matter was a big no-no.

On a personal note, I’m not exactly a big fan of Creative to begin with even though they are regarded as one of the more prominent ‘home-grown’ startups lauded by some others. In fact, I kind of think their name is a misnomer to begin with because I don’t see any sort of innovation shown in their products in recent times (Ipod interface anybody?), but that’s just my two cents worth.

WIRED has more info from the modder himself apparently.

Having said that, I’m still waiting to see how this plays out in the end.

april fool’s day

April 1, 2008 at 10:17 pm (news, ramblings, wtf?) (, , , , , , , )

Today, I met up with my JC classmates Swee and Ten to renew our passports for the upcoming Thailand trip in June, as well as to do our pre-university medical examination at the same time. Turns out my passport is already 10 years old so I would have to apply for a brand new one which costs a whopping 70 bucks!

I actually thought the clerk at the desk was pulling a fast one on me considering the date today and all, but upon further consideration I decided that this civil servant couldn’t give a shit whether today was the end of the world or not with that face of his -_-”

Thankfully, the staff at NUS were considerably more friendly to us prospective students and the whole medical exam went without a hitch. We took some time off while waiting for the X-ray to survey our future campus grounds and for some reason I thought the buildings were a tad old, but I guess I can’t complain too much with only 3 universities on the island at the moment.

I’m actually one of the rare few among my friends going for the Special Term which starts earlier in May as compared to the normal semester in August, so it looks like I’ll be getting quite familiar with the place come one and a half months time ^^;

As you’d probably notice by now, nothing really amusing happened on the first of April in my life so I was sadly left to my own devices to look for something to enrich my day.

So, I went to the Internet (where else? ^^;) and I found that there was nothing short of April Fool’s pranks and gags on the world wide web. It seems that everyone’s trying their best to create the most elaborate schemes to prey upon the unwitting minds of the average surfer.

And when I thought I’ve seen it all, I stumble upon this cracker of a news :

No Picnic: Man Charged With Screwing a Patio Table

Police in Ohio say that a married father of three has confessed to repeatedly having sex with his patio picnic table.

Art Price, Jr., 40, has been charged with four counts of public indecency after a neighbor videotaped him getting all nasty with the umbrella hole in the middle of his plastic picnic table. Apparently preferring the table’s legs in the air, Price reportedly flipped the table over before forcing himself inside of it.

Price admitted that his skeevy antics took place both inside and outside of his home, and police say he did his table humping in broad daylight, not far from a school.

In addition to public outrage, we imagine there’s considerable jealousy among Price’s other lawn furniture. While barbecues and lawn chairs don’t have many places for good loving (unless you’re big enough for that drink holder), we’re sure that plastic gnome hiding in the hedges is wondering why he wasn’t chosen. The garden hose, however, is probably pretty relieved.

It’s things like these which make you think life isn’t so dull anymore. Not.
