here it goes again

Today’s the first day of university classes and considering the fact that these are the first lectures I’ve attended in almost 3 years, they were a kind jolt back to academic life. Not.

Considering the fact that engineering courses are among the more rigorous ones campus has to offer, I was hardly surprised at the lack of the mandatory introductory chit-chat that was so common during first lectures.

Oh well, at least the notes are all available online for printing and the mid-term test dates are already out – 6 weeks to the first trial by fire -_-”

Having applied for computer engineering with no prior computing background, there’s always a nagging feeling that I’ve knowingly gotten myself into the deeper end of the ditch but hopefully it will turn out that I’m wrong at the end of the 4 years ^^;

The timetable’s not been too kind to me so far – I’m stuck in school for effectively 4 and a half whole days a week, but luckily it’s only for one semester.

On the bright side, all the spare time can be used for studying. On the down side, there’s not much else that can be done in campus to kill 5 hours of time -_-”

On other non-academic matters, I’m now a proud 21 year old adult as of 08/08/08, although I don’t know what has changed drastically in my life. R21 movies perhaps?

No lavish presents for me, though I was pretty surprised and pleased that Via planned our spa trip to Batam and got me a Ronaldo Champions Legue jersey. Thanks dear :)

And last but not least, here’s to Tuesday classes that start at 2pm tomorrow. Hurray for sleep-ins!! XD

ZETA plus C1

August 5, 2008 at 4:25 pm (pictures, ramblings) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Well, it’s August in a blink of an eye. School’s starting next week much to my chagrin, but on the bright side EPL is making its comeback on the weekends and my birthday is this Friday!

I guess this year is kinda special and all, since it’s 08/08/08 and the start of the Olympics so I was wondering whether I should just try my hand at the special S$8 million TOTO draw on the very day.

Who knows, maybe I will have more luck on my birthday than usual ^^;

Wishful thinking aside, I finally completed my Zeta Plus C1 Gundam model that I bought 3 years ago. Hurray!! XD

coming of age

April 23, 2008 at 10:17 pm (ramblings) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

One of the perks of bumming around would be the chance to get some exercise in the evenings.

Ok, so I’m kidding. But then again, coming back all tired from work does put the pain back in a pain-in-the-ass when deciding whether to go for a evening jog or not. Having come back from one such jog today, I stumbled upon a simple realization – I’m growing old.

No, not old as in old and frail-looking, but old as in older. Yeah I know I sound like an idiot for stating the obvious, but these things suddenly hit you when the pain that was never in your knee starts bugging you all of a sudden.

Well, not all of my body’s wear and tear can be attributed to aging of course, with many young males in Singapore feeling the effects of the 2 years of National Service way after their ORDs. But one thing led to another, and I’m left thinking about growing up and more specifically, about turning 21 years of age.

Having been to a couple of birthday parties of my ex-classmates since the start of the year, I’ve come to view these elaborate coming-of-age events with a bit of cynicism – and an emptier wallet to boot. Yeah sure, 21 is a symbolic age to be, now that you are a young adult and all, so I guess getting a more extravagant present should be pretty much expected. But thats not what I’m griping about. I’m thinking, and probably a few other like-minded 20-year-old souls turning 21 are too, what for?

Ok, you get to vote in elections and watch R21 movies from now on, and that’s it? To me, this year’s birthday is just another birthday which is just a tad more special than the rest due to its numerical significance in society. Sure, I don’t mind getting bigger and better presents as well as my friends to celebrate with me when the time comes, but I think that’s more than enough.

From what I’ve heard, some of the my friends invite people from all their social circles even though they might not intersect at all, leading to some awkward standing-around-with-nothing-to-do moments. Yeah, you might get the feeling that it’s one heck of a party attendance, but what’s the point of having close to 50 people crowding around when they just show up, deposit their presents, wait for the cake-cutting and leave after that.

I admit that inner cynic’s view is quite tangential indeed since it stems mostly from my own experiences, but what I really want is a small group of close friends celebrating the day with me in a nice and quiet sort of way, that’s all. Maybe it’s just my personality or personal preference, but somehow I think I’m not the only one who feels this way.

On another note, Via’s birthday is coming up in June and she plans to host something at my house. Not that I mind but seriously, thinking of a good present is a chore. Should I get her a watch? A bag? Or a DS lite? I seriously don’t know and the possibilities are endless. Anyway, I still have 2 more months to cook something up that hopefully doesn’t disappoint her ^^;

happy 2008?

January 3, 2008 at 12:22 pm (ramblings) (, , , , , , )

A new year calls for a new start – at least that’s what I thought when I started this blog. Blogger tells me the last time I blogged about my existence was way back in 2006. More accurately, I stopped when via found out about some unsuitable content in one of my posts. I guess I didn’t expect me finding an avenue to vent and voice my thoughts and reflections to cause so much trouble to both of us.

Anyway, that’s that. This blog, though created on a whim, shall not be any different. Heck it’s not even the first day of the year anymore. But better late than never they say. Who’s they anyway?

Today marks the start of my efforts to source for an income source. Not that I didn’t do anything beforehand of course, but nothing as proactive as the 3rd of January. Flipping to the Recruit for the first time, I felt like I was venturing into uncharted territory. Via did a lot of groundwork for me yesterday – enough work for me to feel guilty about my identity as a male, but make no mistake that I’m really grateful for all her efforts.

My first interview was at this run-down building in Aljunied, which seriously gave me second thoughts when I saw it. Throwing caution to the wind (I guess?), my destination eventually led me to this events-planning company which has probably too few personnel to be even considered one. Heck, I had to call the phone to get the receptionist out when I was already at the reception. Talk about first impressions. The manager was an improvement, fortunately, and after listening to the details, I’ve become interested to say the least. Nevermind the fact that I have to work on Saturdays and that the pay was slightly below average, I was actually slightly excited by what new experiences were awaiting me. Time would tell whether I would be right when I return for a 2nd interview next Monday at 8.45am.

Somehow all this job-searching has made me pause after I got home. A part of me longs for the carefree and dare I say slack lifestyle I’ve been enjoying for the past 2 months since the end of my 2-year NS liability. Heck, all the anime I’ve watched since then has made my life more interesting than the past 2 years combined – and I’ve just started on Code Geass, which although isn’t as absurd and awesome as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, is still pretty much kick-ass in its own right. Something about giant mecha duking it out with the world at stake is attractive. Not that via cares mind you – I tried explaining to her the difference between the genre and Power Rangers to no avail. But that’s that I guess.
